Jump-scared by a plugin

Wall Street just got jump-scared by a pluginโ€ฆ then did the financial equivalent of seeing a spider and burning the house down.

For decades, investors worshipped โ€œfundamentals.โ€
This week they fainted at โ€œNDA triage.โ€

A Goldman software basket fell about 6%.
A financial services index dropped nearly 7%.
Even the Nasdaq 100 did a brief Victorian swoon intraday.

The Four Horsemen showed up.
Their names were Product, Shipping, Plugins, and Quiet Launch.

This time the fear came packaged.
Not a new model, a workflow.
Neatly labeled.
Employable. Ready to drop into a job.

According to reports, these plugins aim at very normal, very billable tasks: support drafts, sales research, legal review, financial statements, models, and the โ€œquick NDA lookโ€ that somehow takes three days and a small emotional support latte.

When intelligence plugs directly into work, a lot of expensive interfaces start looking likeโ€ฆ decorative.

A few uncomfortable truths wandered into the daylight:

ย โ€ข Some enterprise software has been charging private-jet money for glorified coordination.
ย โ€ข Seat-based pricing quietly assumes humans must sit in the seats.
ย โ€ข โ€œWorkflowโ€ was a moat. Turns out it was a brochure.

Jensen Huang says the idea that AI replaces software companies is illogical.
Maybe heโ€™s right.
Jim Cramer is also chirping that the software decline seems "overdone" at this time.
Even JPMorgan suggests it is illogical to assume every layer of mission-critical software will be replaced.

Still, watching investors panic over โ€œstructured prompts plus workflow scaffoldingโ€ feels like watching someone discover their gym membership can be replaced by stairs.

Is this an overreactionโ€ฆ or the first honest price discovery the SaaS world has seen in years?
