Shorting human imagination
Wall Street just saw a (Google) Genie and immediately tried to short human imagination.
SoโฆGoogle recently demoed ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ท๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ถ๐ฒ, a prototype that can spin up interactive worlds.
And the mere sight of an AI generating a virtual world was enough to make the stock market believe that
The invisible hand threw the controller.
And, the market rage-quit.
I meanโฆIf tools made hits, Home Depot would be running Hollywood.
Meanwhile, Take-Two is out here doing t๐ต๐ฒ ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ป๐ณ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต: making a franchise people line up for, voluntarily, with cash.
They just posted $๐ญ.๐ณ๐ฒ๐ in quarterly net bookings, up 28%, and reiterated ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ก๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ญ๐ต (๐ ๐ข๐บ๐บ๐บ)
That is a number so large it probably has its own gravitational pull.
it is also a gentle reminder that โthe end of creativityโ keeps getting rescheduled, usually right after earnings.
A few boring truths that keep surviving every shiny demo:
ย โข ๐ง๐ผ๐ผ๐น๐ keep getting cheaper. ๐ง๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ keeps sending invoices.
ย โข โWorld generationโ is the ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ ๐ณ๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐๐๐ฒ๐. The ๐ผ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ are mission design, pacing, comedy, QA, performance, marketing, and the uniquely human art of making players care.
ย โข ๐๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐๐ป๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ do not migrate because a demo looked cool. They migrate because their friends did.
Also, Project Genie is literally labeled an
When did โexperimentalโ mean โimmediate total replacement of an industry that takes 6 years and 600 people to ship one game.
So where does the wedge actually live?
Tooling, IP, community, distribution?
Because Iโm starting to suspect itโs ๐ต๐๐บ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐น: the writers, designers, engineers, and producers who do the part that doesnโt fit in a demo.
i mean, Iโm kidding.
But also: itโs humans.
Obviously.
